Happy Hallowe’en

Someone once said that "Satan's greatest achievement was to convince the world he didn't exist".  The so-called festivities of last night just go to show how accurate that is.  While walking through the university campus last night on the way back from the orchestra rehearsal I noticed various flats in the accommodation towers were having parties, with people dancing on tables and "Happy Halloween" banners in the windows.  What exactly are they celebrating?(more…)

Recording day 2

Today I laid out another couple of tracks for the album, in preparation for Paula and Rachel coming over tomorrow morning.  To make things slightly easier for Paula, who will mainly be doing backing vocals, I recorded some vocals myself so that she'll have something to sing against.  It's sounding good already, despite needing several more instruments adding and the whole thing mixing, so I'm quite pleased with the way it's all going so far.(more…)

Cut and shut

This morning I've been editing some of Rachel's bass parts that we recorded earlier this week. It's actually quite a straightforward process, and was a lot easier and quicker than I had expected. Working from the individual takes we had recorded, I chose which bits I liked, cut them out of the original recording and pasted them onto a master track, building up a complete track from the good bits of the recordings. Logic Express's scissors tool really worked well, allowing me to snip recordings apart into separate clips. What was even more useful was that although by default it would snap to the beginning of the bar or the beginning of a beat, you could hold down the Option key and snip wherever you wanted - fantastic!(more…)

Recording day 1

This morning Rachel came round to do some recording for our Rooted album. So far I've only got four songs laid out on my computer, but it took us all morning to record Rachel's bass parts in for those four songs! Recording always seems to take longer than I expect... It was sounding pretty good though by the end of the session, and I've got enough bass recorded that I can now start playing around with it and mixing the takes together to create the perfect bass line!(more…)

More song co-writing

This afternoon I went round to Paula's house to help her finish writing a couple of songs she'd been working on. She had the words, she just needed some help with the music, so I said I've give her a hand. The more up-beat of the two we sorted out fairly quickly - a tune came to mind fairly easily and although in some ways it strikes a remarkable resemblance to "There is a voice that must be heard" and "Love so amazing", it's pretty good. The words are excellent, as Paula's tend to be, and I reckon it's the sort of song that would go down well in church. The second song was a little more reflective, yet needed to the idea of the majesty of God, so I opted for a 6-8 time signature as that can convey this quite effectively. The words are fantastic, really uplifting, and although it took us a bit longer to settle on a tune we liked, I'm quite pleased with it now.(more…)

Spiritual gifts

Richard, who gave the sermon at church this morning, happened to mention spiritual gifts, and how God can give or take them away as He sees fit, in contrast with spiritual fruits which we should all have all the time. This got me thinking, particularly about the sermon I am preaching this evening. When I was working at the Chaplaincy I ended up preaching fairly regularly, and I'm told they were pretty good too - I know I was particularly pleased with some of them!(more…)
