My fancy dress birthday party

Elphaba and Fiyero“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.”

As much as I hate to admit it, I’m not sure I agree entirely with Paul’s statement, at least not in the context of birthday parties anyway. I guess there can’t be many people who celebrate their 24th birthday by inviting friends round for a short-notice fancy dress party! The general theme we were working towards was any character from film or stage, which was quite a broad spectrum, and produced some interesting costumes…

Ellie and I came as characters from both film and stage, in that they are from the film “The Wizard of Oz” and also the stage show “Wicked”. The photo above is of The Wicked Witch of the West and the Scarecrow, aka Elphaba and Fiyero, aka Ellie and I. Anne-Marie came as Luke Skywalker, Sarah came as Maid Marian (complete with bow and arrow), Alison and Dan came as a Nun and a Monk, PhilB came as some random person from the Matrix (i.e. he wore his normal attire and put sunglasses on), and Alex came as someone I’d never heard of before. Phill and Phil came as each other, supposedly, Chris came disguised as himself (which was very convincing), Jenny came as an ambulance person, Esther and Phil came as themselves too, and Bethany was a cat.

We ended up watching some of Comic Relief during the evening, which was good. Catherine Tate meeting the Doctor was hilarious, and although we didn’t see it on TV I watched her sketch with Tony Blair on YouTube this morning – utterly fantastic!! Ant and Dec were good too; they’ve grown up a lot since Byker Grove.

Sadly some people had already left by the time I remembered I had jelly and ice cream, but those of us left enjoyed it. I would have liked to have attempted musical chairs as well, but there wasn’t really room for it and people were hyper enough already! Phill S and PhilB got up to their usual dancing actics, doing the Macarena and Saturday Night to whatever music was playing. Ellie and I also sang along to “As long as you’re mine” from Wicked, which was really special – not sure anyone was listening, though that’s probably a good thing!

Now I’ve got to start tidying. There are dead balloons scattered around, and dishes of crisps on the coffee table, not to mention odd bits of straw that fell out of my stuffing from my costume. So that should keep me busy this afternoon.

Thanks to everyone who came last night, it was lots of fun! Piccies are up on PhotoLounge Extra as per usual.
