This morning I was delighted to find that everything outside my window was covered in a thin sheet of whiteness.  Yay!  In fact, so great was my excitement that I gave in to the temptation and went for a drive, just so that I could experience the thrill of sliding around on a snowy road.  Unfortunately the snow wasn’t quite that deep.  In fact, it all proved a little disappointing in the end.  It would seem that the snow was only really nicely settled in my little cul-de-sac, so as soon as I got out onto the other roads it was just like normal driving.  And by the time I got back the snow was melting from my road too.  Ah well, I’ll just have to bide my time… the snow will be back another time I’m sure.

In other news, I’ve just added a spam filter to my blog.  I was surprised and frustrated when I logged on this morning to find 155 comments waiting to be checked, all of which were spam.  So after a little investigation on WordPress plugin sites I’ve installed one.  I’ll just have to sit back and wait now to see how much difference it makes.  In the meantime, if any of you real people do have problems leaving comments, do let me know.

I also spent a good deal of time yesterday upgrading web sites.  Those web sites I’ve developed that are using the MODx CMS are being given a spring clean over the next few days in the shape of an upgrade to the latest version of MODx.  It’s a fairly painless operation, in theory, though I spent most of my time struggling with FTP, with connections being lost half way through uploading files.  This led to me trying out other FTP clients to see if that might help, and left Cyberduck temporarily in favour of Transmit.  They’re both of a likeness really, I don’t think either is noticeably faster than the other, though Transmit does seem to be more stable.  The new MODx is quite nice though, a bit green on the GUI front (not my choice of colours), but much tidier.  If any of you are using MODx, I’d definitely recommend the upgrade, it’s more secure and more clever too!

Ah, MODx has had an upgrade – thanks for that, I shall upgrade the Fordham website 😀

I’ve found the best tool for stopping spam in WordPress is Akismet – it seems to work fine for me, I used to get loads of blog spam but now I only get a rare one filtering through.
