Developing stuff

Today's blog post is a story of three halves.  Or should that be three thirds?...  Well, whatever, there are three of them, and each has something something to do with developing, even if it is a rather tenuous link!(more…)

MiniGallery 0.3B on the web

Just a quick announcement that MiniGallery now has its own web site!  I’ve knocked up a quick web site, which you’ll find at www.matthewdawkins.co.uk/minigallery, where I shall be putting further releases and information.  It’s still very early in the project, and I doubt it’s really suitable for the majority of Read more…

The brown alternative

Last night, following inspiration from one of Phill's blog posts, I downloaded the Ubuntu distribution of Linux. The CD image was almost 700MB, so it took a good long while to download, and I'm glad I don't have a download limit with my ISP! The first thing that stood out for me was the ability to boot straight from the CD and run Linux without needing to install anything on the computer, just to try it out. Neat! Of course, I had to borrow a keyboard to do this, because my computer BIOS setup didn't like my wireless keyboard and I couldn't tell it to boot from the CD drive...(more…)

C’est l’amore…

For her birthday I gave Ellie a piece of paper.  This was not just any old piece of paper, though, it was an invitation for a mystery tour, which we finally had this weekend.  It has been so hard keeping it a secret - for weeks now I've had to resist the urge to tell her about it, resist the temptation to talk about it on my blog, stop myself from telling other people about it.  But it was all worth while, she loved it!(more…)

Album preview

I am pleased to announce that I have a preview track available now for the album "In the beginning" by Rooted. Today I was doing some more recording for one of the quieter tracks, and having got it to an almost-complete state I thought people might be interested to hear how it sounds. At almost 7 minutes it's longer than your average pop song, and despite its apparent fullness is actually being performed by only two people - Paula and myself. Download it by clicking on the link below."I draw near to the place of mercy" - by Paula Stubbs and Matthew Dawkins(more…)

MiniGallery 0.2b

After a lot more work today I’ve finally decided to tentatively release my gallery script as a beta, should anyone be interested.  It’s in no way complete, and there are probably loads of holes still yet to fill, but it’s working for me at the moment!  I’ve put a live Read more…

Too tired

I've just written another song, which I thought I'd share with you all, called "Too tired". It all began with some chords and the beginnings of a tune that I'd been working on earlier in the week, and today I managed to sit down and work some words into it. Interestingly it wasn't at all what I expected - I imagined it would work well as a heartfelt song of praise, expressing deep emotions of love and thanksgiving, but it ended up being the more like the depressing side of the Prodigal Son.(more…)

iTunes > iStore > iBuy > iLike

Today saw my first foray into the world of purchased MP3s from the iTunes store.  Since suffering from a severe case of guilt a few years ago I stopped downloading MP3s from file sharing networks, and have only created MP3s from CDs I actually own (or at least I can lay my hands on the original, even if it's back at my parents' house).  But today I finally caved in and decided to purchase an album I've had my eye on for a while, Nichole Nordeman's latest album "Brave".  I figured since I rarely listen to music anywhere but in front of my computer, buying MP3s were more appropriate, and cuts out the postage costs.
