Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I’ve just been trying to do some simple image manipulation with Gimp, an open source free image editor which I’m using on my Mac. It’s nice that it’s free, but I’ve just found out the hard way why no one would pay for it. It’s rubbish. It can’t even handle simple copy and paste operations! I selected an area of the image I wanted to copy, copied it, pasted it, and found it hadn’t pasted anything at all!! Grrr!! I tried it over and over, making sure I had the right layer selected… in the end I gave up, I’m going back to my PC to edit the file on Photoshop. The only reason I’m not using Photoshop on the Mac is because I’ve got an old version which doesn’t run in OS X. Grrr again.

Then I decided to release my frustration by making a cup of tea. So on went the kettle. Then the hot water went into the cup, along with the tea bag. I stirred it to the correct strength and binned the tea bag. It was at that point that I discovered that we had no milk. GRRRR!!! Things not going my way at the moment…

  1. That’s the only problem with the GIMP – it’s not bad for what you pay for it (i.e., zilch), but compared to pro art packages it just doesn’t cut the mustard. Or something.

  2. No Alex, before you get excited, Photoshop was originally designed for the Mac, as is all the best design software, because Macs are vastly superior for that sort of thing. PCs are still better for games though…

  3. While that article may well point out that the PC they tested was faster than the Mac they chose, that much could have been established just by looking at the processor speed. My point is that my 1.2Ghz PC is sluggish compared to my 1Ghz Mac.

  4. Yeah, but your computer is older… newer PCs outperform Macs. And it’s probably cheaper to get a newer 3GHz PC with hyperthreading than a Mac. Which is probably why Macs are going over to Intel processors… oh sweet irony, bwahahahahahahaha! Sorry…

  5. GIMP does work, you just have to know which buttons to press 😉

Whether it works *well* or not is another matter.
